Chicken eggs are a valuable product that is present in the daily diet of a modern person. Also, most farmers keep chickens exclusively for egg production. But what if you are a farmer and your chicken lays eggs with blood? On the other hand, what should a consumer do who decided to fry scrambled eggs and there were red marks on them? We will talk about all this in our article and analyze why there is blood in a chicken egg and whether it is dangerous for the human body. These questions concern both farmers and consumers of egg products.
Where you can see blood stains
Blood formations can be localized not only in the yolk and protein, but also appear on the shell without penetrating its structure. Blood in the eggs is a terrible phenomenon. It is necessary to find out the reason in order to eliminate it.
In protein
Blood inclusions are often found in winter. This phenomenon occurs because greens are missing from the diet of laying hens, and the body does not have enough minerals. The most important minerals are selenium, magnesium and calcium.
Such a problem as a lack of minerals is solved by introducing vitamin complexes and special premixes into the diet. If blood in the protein continues to appear after the introduction of vitamin complexes, it is necessary to consult a specialist.
In the yolk
Here blood appears as a result of damage to blood vessels during ovulation. At this moment, the chicken egg is not yet formed. A number of reasons:
- the number of birds is more than necessary;
- a small birdhouse and a yard for walking;
- constant shocks and stresses.
Blood clots are formed with high protein content in feed. If you eliminate all the negative factors, the problem disappears. But sometimes blood formations in the yolk are a hereditary phenomenon. Unfortunately, such laying hens will have to be killed.

On the shell
The most frequent problem of chicken owners is blood on the shell. Most often, it is associated with damage to the fallopian tube. Why this happens:
- The surface of the hen’s oviduct is damaged or inflamed. The plumage will be lethargic, calm. There is no appetite during inflammation.
- Eggs too big. Large egg production occurs in broiler birds or because there are too many protein additives in the diet;
- The chicken suffered from a disease that affected the organs of the reproductive system.
Note ! Spotting in egg products is a signal that the laying hen needs to be shown to the veterinarian.
Causes of blood smears
It is recommended to identify factors that cause blood clots in eggs. There is an opinion among ordinary people that sometimes the yolk is surrounded by a blood stain because the circulatory system has begun to form. It is strictly forbidden to use products with such a defect.
Let’s analyze the reasons why chickens begin to lay eggs with blood?
The main ones
If the poultry farmer found blood in the egg, he should know the reasons:
- Stress. Chickens are not stress-resistant birds. Their emotional state can be affected by transportation, the appearance of predators, a high level of noise, falling from a height, conflicts in the chicken stock, and even the appearance of another pet in the chicken coop (for example, your cat climbs into the chicken coop, or your dog barks at the chickens). There is blood in the eggs due to stress.
- Nutrition. A lot depends on a balanced diet, especially the quantity and quality of egg products. With an insufficient amount of minerals and vitamins, as well as with an excess of proteins, the quality of eggs noticeably deteriorates, up to the appearance of blood inclusions.
- A shortage or, on the contrary, an excess of males in the aviary leads to negative consequences.
- Space is important for feathers. Experienced farmers advise placing no more than four laying hens per one square meter. Otherwise, the birds will be cramped, which will not be reflected in the egg products in the best way.
- Weakened immunity.
- Excessively intensive laying. If the bird lays an excessive number of eggs, this can greatly affect their quality. It is better to take measures to reduce pregnancy.
- Transferred diseases. Some diseases, especially infectious ones, can affect the reproductive system, which causes inflammatory processes and, as a result, a decrease in the number and quality of eggs.
- Heredity. If a hen lays bloody eggs, and this feature has been inherited, it is unfortunately impossible to get rid of this problem for a particular hen.
These are the main reasons for the appearance of eggs with bloody inclusions. But there are other factors that cause such an unpleasant phenomenon.
Other factors
Poultry breeders who have been keeping laying hens for more than a year claim that bloody eggs are more common in birds with colored plumage. White birds have stronger immunity. In addition, blood inclusions are more often found in brown eggs than in white ones.
If the farmer feeds the birds with supplements that accelerate growth and the formation of the reproductive system, the chickens may begin to lay eggs with blood.
If the chicken coop is not organized correctly, the birds can harm each other. If a hen sees another bird laying an egg, she may start pecking at its cloaca. This leads to open wounds on the cloaca, which leads to blood on the shell.

Salpingitis or inflammation of the fallopian tube against the background of an infectious disease also entails the appearance of bloody eggs. What can cause the disease?
- untimely cleaning in the poultry house;
- humidity in the room;
- insufficient ventilation of the chicken coop;
- trauma to the oviduct or cloaca;
- improper nutrition.
Salpingitis often leads to the death of the bird. The disease must be treated in the early stages.
Can you eat eggs with blood?
Having discovered an egg with blood, a natural question arises – can it be eaten? The main thing is the inclusions themselves. When the blood in chicken eggs is in the form of clots, then this product is not dangerous for our body. Such a product can be eaten. Blood inclusions do not change the taste, do not impair the nutritional value. But for a more aesthetic appearance of the dish, it is better to remove the clots.
If only the shell is contaminated, wash and wipe the egg well enough. The product can be eaten raw or subjected to heat treatment. Washed eggs can be stored for a long time.
Important ! If there were ring blood inclusions around the yolk, this indicates the formation of an embryo that died at the initial stage of its development. The product cannot be eaten even after cooking.

Although the blood in chicken eggs does not pose a threat to our body, it is a serious problem for the laying hen. If chickens lay eggs with blood inside or on the shell, the breeder should take a number of actions to eliminate the problem.
First actions
The laying hen is isolated. This is done so that in the event of an infectious disease, the poultry does not infect all other chickens. The laying hen is placed in a dry place where the light is muted.
Note! Semi-darkness is a mandatory condition, as with insufficient light, the productivity of the bird decreases, and if a problem occurs, the laying rate should be reduced.

Method of treatment
If the pathology arose as a result of an inflammatory process in the oviduct, the following must be done:
- Prepare the laying hen. The main thing is that there is no egg in the fallopian tube.
- Make an enema with a salt solution. Dissolve 3 teaspoons of salt in warm water (250 ml) and wash the oviduct. It is better to do this procedure with someone, as the bird may start to break out.
- Antimicrobial drugs. “Metronidazole” is most often used. Half of the tablet is mixed with a saline solution and administered through an enema or dissolved in the daily rate of drinking water.
Important ! It is necessary to work with a sick bird in medical gloves.
The average course of treatment lasts a week. For the first three days, the fallopian tube is washed twice a day – in the morning and in the evening, then only in the evening. It is important not to stop the procedure after the first signs of improvement. The course of treatment must be completed completely.

If the cloaca and oviduct are injured, the chicken is settled in a dry place with dimmed lighting. This is done to reduce performance. The anus is lubricated with ordinary petroleum jelly to reduce pain from intercourse.
The injured area itself is treated with hydrogen peroxide. In this case, you can also use “Metronidazole” or another antimicrobial drug, but in a smaller dosage. The duration of treatment depends on the degree of severity and neglect of the injury. Ten days is usually enough.
Signs of improvement in the chicken’s condition are a change in the color of the cloaca from red to white and the absence of blood on the testicles.
Preventive measures
To avoid problems with the quality of egg products, the following preventive measures are used:
- Proper conditions of maintenance. This means that there must be enough space for the birds in the chicken coop. The room should be clean and well ventilated.
- Separately, it is worth stopping at the saddles. They are located at a height suitable for a specific breed. The distance from the walls should allow not to touch the bird with the tail of the partition. The smoker should be comfortable on the seat.
- Nutrition is balanced and complete. Fresh greens and vitamins must be present in the diet of chickens. In winter, sprouted grains can be used as fresh greens. The bird should eat healthy and balanced food.
- Absence of stressful situations. The chicken coop must be located away from the house, road and garage, as birds do not like noise. The chicken coop should be comfortable and calm.
- When predators are detected, it is important to take the necessary measures to eliminate them.
- One rooster is raised for every ten hens. If there are not enough males or more than needed, problems may arise.
- It is necessary to strengthen the immunity of chickens. For this, there are not only medicines and vitamin complexes, but also natural products: berries, fruits, garlic, herbs, spices, apple cider vinegar and even eggs. Experienced poultry farmers advise giving chickens 30 milligrams of chloride-chloral for three weeks, and the immunity will strengthen.
An artificial decrease in productivity with too intensive egg-laying is also important. Everything is good in moderation. This also applies to egg products. If the hen lays too many eggs, she should be moved to a place with subdued lighting, that is, reduce the daylight hours. Birds lay fewer eggs in the dark.
