With the onset of summer, many novice breeders have a question – is it possible to give celandine to chickens. The opinions of experts are divided: some claim that this plant is dangerous for poultry, while others, on the contrary, recommend it as a preventive measure.
Composition and properties of the plant
The diet of chickens, the preparation of fodder – all this requires a special approach and attention. For many, celandine is an ordinary weed. It is found everywhere. Therefore, the question arises whether it is possible to give celandine to chickens and chickens. Folk healers noted the useful properties of the plant many centuries ago. It perfectly copes with warts, inflammations on the skin and eczema. In therapy, it is used to this day in its pure form, preparing ointments, tinctures and decoctions on its basis.
Approximately 20 alkaloids were found in the composition of the weed – in large quantities it is pure poison, but with the right approach – an excellent pain reliever. It contains vitamins C and carotene, essential oils, succinic, chelidonic, citric and malic acids. All these components have a beneficial effect on living organisms, but most of them can only be used externally.
However, there are recipes for decoctions and infusions intended for oral administration. Such drugs help with diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, ENT organs. They are used in oncology and gynecology. Taking drugs based on weed can stop the development of metastases. The plant has proven itself well in the treatment of tuberculosis.
An inconspicuous plant can work real miracles, but only for the human body. Exceeding the recommended doses can lead to intoxication and convulsions.

Can celandine be given to birds?
Some farmers recommend giving celandine dosed. After all, the plant strengthens immunity and has an anthelmintic effect, improves the appetite and productivity of laying hens – they lay eggs with an orange shade of shell due to vitamin A, which is a natural dye.
It is worth giving celandine to chickens a few sprigs at a time, but no more than once every 21 days.
The world is full of useful and nutritious herbs that cause intoxication. The diet of laying hens should be balanced, nutritious and complete. You need to feed the chickens with healthy products. Therefore, finely chopped and fresh are introduced into their diet:
- meadow clover;
- oat;
- pea;
- dandelions;
- piggery;
- purslane.
It is strictly forbidden to give poisonous herbs to chickens. In places of detention, they must be plucked out.
Farmers recommend using celandine decoction to treat chicken coops. The essential oils of the plant repel insects, and the poisonous components destroy fleas, worms and other parasites. To enhance the effect, celandine can be combined with wormwood.

Contraindications to use
However, giving celandine to chickens is dangerous and sometimes unnecessary. It is impossible to purposefully feed this plant, because in large quantities its active components cause disturbances in the work of many body systems, which leads to the death of the bird. For this reason, it is not recommended to give celandine to chickens.
Despite the usefulness of the plant, it remains poisonous. In broilers and laying hens, this plant can cause severe poisoning or lead to death.
If poisonous plants grow in the pen or in the places where laying hens roam, they must be uprooted immediately.
In small chicks, the poisonous weed causes a disorder of the digestive system, which is accompanied by diarrhea. After its use, shortness of breath, nausea and exhausting vomiting appear in poultry. If laying hens have become depressed and less active, stopped eating well, drink water greedily – this is poisoning caused by a poisonous plant.
If laying hens use celandine on their own and in small quantities, you can not worry. Chickens know exactly which plants they need, in what quantities.
